(the City of the Popes) – VIVIERS THE VIVARAIS
Wake up in Avignon and breakfast on board. As early
on as the 12th century, Avignon was a prominent city
due to its famous bridge across the Rhone (Pont
d’Avignon). With the arrival of the Popes in the 14th
century, Avignon became a second Rome. After
breakfast, leave on a guided tour (optional) of
the City of Popes and its Palace, a citadel surrounded
by ramparts and perched on a rock over
the river, once a lavish court bustling with artists
and scholars. Enjoy some time in Avignon before
returning to the ship for lunch and cruising gently
on to Roquemaure. Departure around 2.00pm for
the optional excursion by coach to visit the Ardèche
Gorge. Heading towards Bourg Saint Andéol across the Plateau des Gras to reach Vallon Pont
d’Arc. Here, the Ardèche has hewn through the cliff,
to construct a grandiose natural arch. “The Pont
d’Arc”, 34 metres high. From here, the itinerary follows
the famous Route des Gorges where you can
explore the harmonious meanderings of the river.
Numerous panoramic viewpoints mark the way. We
will stop at one of them. They are situated on the
high corniche and offer breathtaking views over the
Gorge. Back on board in Saint-Etienne-des-Sorts around 5.00pm. Departure of the boat for Viviers at
8.00pm. Dinner on board. Arrival in Viviers around
9.30pm. Overnight stopover.

Then, we will follow the road of the Rousset mountain
pass, from where you will enjoy a wonderful
panoramic view over the Vercors Plateau. On
